Bring on the Christmas!!!

December 1, 2009

The Advent calendar is filled.  The Elf on the Shelf has arrived (to be discovered tomorrow morning by the children).  The Nativity scene is ready for the shepherds…  I think we’re ready for the Christmas season to officially begin!

We are starting a new tradition this year with our Advent calendar.  Instead of each day being the addition of an ornament on the Advent Christmas tree, or a candy-filled pocket, we have stuffed each day with a different activity, craft, or Bible verse.  It was fun coming up with all the ideas- some things we already do each year and some things we hope to add to our list of traditions.  The kids have been looking forward to this new set-up for the last week or so since we started talking about it with them.

We have beautiful family heirloom Nativity set passed down from my mother, from her mother, from her mother.  It is always a joy to bring it out each year and watch my kiddos ‘oooh and ahhh’ over each figurine, just like I did when I was a little girl.  However, it is not a set that can handle the daily touching and playing the kids would like to give each member of the scene.  So this year we’ve taken a step to remedy that problem.  We bought the kids the Playmobil Nativity set!  They will be able to play with, move around, rearrange and travel each of the characters as much as their little hearts desire.  We’ll start out with the stable and the animals, which the kiddos will add to the scene tomorrow.  We’ll go through the weeks leading up to Christmas and add in more and more people and animals coinciding with the verses in the Bible read from our Advent calendar.

Our Elf on the Shelf is all set to make his arrival known tomorrow morning.  The kiddos named him Murray.  As in “Murray Christmas”.  Ha ha.  What a sense of humor those little goofballs have!  I love the way their young minds work.  If you don’t already know the story of the Elf on the Shelf, by all means, you need to educate yourself!  Especially if you have a child.  Really, really especially if you have more than one child.  It’s all about encouraging good behavior, and goodness knows, the more kiddos you add to the mix the dicey-er (Is that a word?  It is now.) it can be for all of them to consistently sport the attitudes and mindfulness we as parents so desire.  Murray- buddy- you’ve got your work cut out for you this Christmas season!

We have our church’s annual Advent breakfast this Saturday, followed by our family tree-hunting trip.  We’ll put up the tree and many of our decorations Saturday evening and after church on Sunday.  Should be a fun weekend!

Tomorrow’s Advent event?  Attend the Festival of Trees lighting ceremony at a beautiful, local historic hotel.

I love this time of year!  Especially seeing it through the eyes of my children.
